Finished the last part of the "Once were warriors" trilogy earlier this week. Brilliant final book of a Maori tale which started off in a menacing fashion in "Once were warriors".
The movie version was able to capture the first novel perfectly and can be considered a modern day classic.
"What becomes of the broken hearted" was a great follow-up book but the movie version deviated considerably which is a shame since the book had so much more to offer than the action focussed on in the movie.
In this final part "Jake's long shadow" there's almost no violence. Well, not entirely true but the four instances that do lead into violence are cut off right when people start bashing each other. Quite effective.
But the focus of this final part lies much more in the drama of the remains of the Heke family so many years after Beth and Jake's explosive marriage. There's superb dialogues here and the frequent exposure to Jake's thoughts makes up for a thrilling read.
If they ever do make a movie of "Jake's long shadow" then I hope they'll get Temuera Morrison to play Jake Heke again. Not only has he played that role in the first two movies but he's a great actor who deserves to play this character who's been through so many soul searching after the break up with Beth.
Mark my words, if this movie is ever made and Temuera plays Jake again then he might very well win some fucken awards. The Jake is character is THAT intricate and interesting. And Temuera simply owns that role.
To end the rant, huge kudos to Alan Duff for writing about Maoris and their culture so candidly. He's brutally honest and never strays from exposing the spots where it hurts most.
Excellent writer.

memory flash back
Silly how something trivial can trigger a memory. I just finished watching Woody Allen's brilliant "Hannah and her sisters" and looked at the banana on the table and BAM.
I'm back in 1994, on a school trip to London. We visit the old Wembley stadium and were given a lunch box with among other things a banana in it. We had a group picture taken right outside the soccer stadium and I remember vividly being in a silly mood and placed the banana in front of my crotch. My friend and class mate Erik saw me, laughing and imitated me.
Back at school we checked the pic and sure enough you could see us standing there with a banana in front of our crotches. Perhaps no one else realized what we did on the pic since a group pic obviously doesn't show much detail per person.
Either way, juveline fun is the best. Cheers to Erik (where ever he may be) for joining in.

A song of solace
Come in, babe
Across these purple fields
The sun has sunk behind you
Across these purple fields
That idiot-boy in the corner
Is speaking deviated truths
Come on, admit it, babe
It's a wonderful life
If you can find it
If you can find it
If you can find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
Ooh it's a wonderful thing
Speak our secret into your hands
And hold it in between
Plunge your hands into the water
And drown it in the sea
There will be nothing between us, baby
But the air that we breathe
Don't cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
If you can find it
If you can find it
If you can find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
It's a wonderful, wonderful thing
We can build our dungeons in the air
And sit and cry the blues
We can stomp across this world
With nails hammered through our shoes
We can join that troubled chorus
Who criticise and accuse
It don't matter much
We got nothing much to lose
But this wonderful life
If you can find it
And when you find it
And when you find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
It's a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful thing
Sometimes our secrets are all we've got
With our lives we must defend
Sometimes the air between us, babe
Is unbearably thin
Sometimes it's wise to lay down your gloves
And just give in
Come in, come in
Come in, come in
To this wonderful life
If you can find it
And if you find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
It's a wonderful, wonderful thing
It's a wonderful life
It's a wonderful life
