no 1 fave movie of all time!

To avoid having Tiago jump off of a cliff here's finally my number 1 all time favorite movie!

1. Once upon a time in the West

The memories are somewhat blurry concerning the question whether I first saw the movie or whether I first heard Harmonica's theme. Fact is that Harmonica's theme was used every year for the school's Easter play of the Last Supper and the following events right up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. So, going to a religious school did have some benefit after all :-)

The use of Harmonica's theme during the epic crucifixion scene in the church made a big impression on me as a youngster and I fell in love with the music. My primary school performed this Easter play every year of the 6 years I went there and eventually in my final year I also had a role in the play. I ended up playing Judas Iscariot but that's another story...

Quite possibly I saw the movie some time after the first time I heard the music. Yet the combination of the western genre, the immense epic feel, the enigmatic role of Charles Bronson, and Ennio Morricone's dazzling score left me speachless. The story was so enticing, raw and one couldn't help but feel drawn in right away and root for Harmonica. There isn't that much dialogue but the characters speak volumes in their gestures, facial expressions and postures. Additionally, a strong sense of finality is present in this movie which resonated in me even back then. Not only as intented by Leone in the sense that the days of the wild west was over when the railroad started to make its way through the US, but also in the genre of the Western movie. This really is THE definite and ultimate Western.

I finally saw this brilliant movie on the big screen in the summer of 2007 and I had goosebumps pretty much the whole way through. Even thinking of Harmonica's theme at this very moment invokes goosebumps all over my body.
Honestly, how could I chose any other movie as my number one?

post surgery day 6

Finally a sign of life huh.
I'm still recovering big time but figured it is about time to write a little here about the whole shebang. The surgery apparently fine but since they completely knocked me out I obviously don't remember anything.
I do remember waking up feeling disoriented, thirsty as hell. Since I just got out of the OR I was still on IV which means no drinking just yet. I kept bugging them and they wetted my mouth a few times but that didn't help all that much.
Once I got to the 2nd recovery room I was given a drink and soon after finished it, and bleeding all over it hehe, I needed to take a pee. Nobody around so I asked some visitors to other patients in the recovery room but still no nurse popping out. So I just belted out that I had to pee. That worked :-)
Trying to walk while still under IV is like doing the moonwalk on a beach ball.
Another nasty effect from the IV is that you feel the constant need to pee but you only trickle, if you're lucky. I seriously spent most of the night on the toilet trying to pee. Fortunately during the night the IV effect wore off and I started being able to take a decent piss.

Paul showed up while I was in the 2nd recovery room, I think while I was trying to get dressed. That took a while and although I could walk slightly better than that first walk to the restroom the nurse turned up with a wheelchair. I was rolled to Paul's car and got in, all the while bleeding. Had to throw the used tissues onto the car's floor cause the bleeding was endless.

We picked up Silvia who would babysit me since Paul had a work meeting to attend to which turned out to last till after 11 pm or so. Was I glad to have someone around me phew. I really underestimated the aftermath I encountering and which is still giving me fun times.

During the first 2.5 days I had internal packaging up my nose so my head was congested. Breathing, swallowing, talking, eating, drinking all were extremely hard. With every swallow I could feel the internal packaging go up and down. While changing the external bandage on Thursday I noticed that the packaging in my right nostril was slowly being pushed out due to the swallowing. Eventually I ended up pulling this one out on Friday morning, several hours before the next doctor's appointment was and when he would remove both packaging. But when one of the packaging is already hanging out of your nose covering your mouth you simply can't avoid removing it to be able to put on a new bandage.

Back to the first night. Silvia ordered some Chinese online while I just tried drinking as much water as I could bear to swallow. Since I wasn't allowed to use straws I rarely finished any of the glasses. I put on "La vie en rose" for Silvia while I was spending most of the night on the toilet trying to overcome the IV peeing effect.
Somewhere around 11:30pm Brad showed up and fairly soon after Paul showed up to pick up Silvia. Both Silvia and Brad helped me changing the bandage and witnessed all the bloody stuff so kudos to them for being true warriors.
I believe Brad and I watched some more DVDs before we finally decided to go to sleep. I think I got like 30 minutes of sleep that night.

From Thursday on I started getting fevers and headaches which the Tylenol didn't do jack shit about so I asked Brad to get me some decent painkillers. I forgot which night it was but one night I was feverish and half hallucinating and it felt like my nose was actually detached from my face. Scary shit!

Brad went to visit his parents on Thursday afternoon but returned around 9pm or so to watch the Steelers game with snowy reception on my TV. I slept through most of the game being exhausted from everything that happened since Wednesday morning on and the serious lack of sleep.

On Friday Steffi picked me up to drive me to my doctor's appointment where the internal packaging in my left nostril was removed. That was extremely uncomfortable feeling and very very bloody. But it was also a huge relief to finally have all the internal stuff removed from my nose. As the doctor put it: this was the moment from which on I would start to actually feel better. That was true with the difference of eating. Although I couldn't eat much I would get fever and headache everything I ate something. Which took hours to wear off.
So when Saturday arrived, which was also my birthday, I decided to only eat once during the entire day. However, I turned out not to eat anything until after the party.
Also had a webcam session with my parents and sister which lasted for a good 2.5 hours. Just before it started my nose exploded and started oozing pus and blood a lot. Since I was afraid I'd run out of bandages I decided to just dip my nose constantly during the webcam session.
Once we finished the session I changed the bandage but soon felt it getting soaked again. Once the party started I was back into dipping and being silent mode while my guests chatted and enjoyed some drinks/bites.

I don't remember much of Sunday, I just watched more He-Man episodes from the Season 2: Volume 1 boxset and also saw some movies. Additionally, I prepared some dinner (spaghetti) which was the first warm supper since Tuesday December 18.

I ran out of movies to watch yesterday so I decided to drive to Dreaming Ant to quickly grab some new ones. The draining seemed to have stopped so I was in dubio whether I should put on a new bandage. In hindsight, I'm glad I did 'cause halfway through on my way to Dreaming Ant the waters broke again and flooded big time. I couldn't even speak while at Dreaming Ant, that's how bad the flooding was.
So I just got the DVDs, got the hell out of there and changed the bandage once I got home.
No further drainage happened so when I couldn't fall asleep this last night I just removed it around 4:35am. Interestingly I did catch some sleep after that.

Right now I'm having some breakfast and as a consequence am dripping a bit but no way in hell am I going to put on a new bandage.

So you see, the fun is not over just yet.

a nervous septum

Yikes, tomorrow is surgery day and the nerves have finally found me big time.
To think how much effort it costed on my part to actually have them do it tomorrow. While we set the date 2 weeks ago they told me I'd receive some paperwork. Never did. I called them almost every day and on Monday they finally admitted that the paperwork was lost.
Fortunately they did recover it and told me I needed to get some blood work done before the surgery date. Since I didn't feel like taking even more days off from work I told them they should do it on the surgery date. They had to get this authorized last minute.

I guess things finally worked out 'cause I have to be at the hospital at 10am to get the blood work done while the actual surgery is scheduled at 12:30pm. The procedure takes about 1.5 to 2 hours followed by 2 recovery hours.
Will prolly be kicked out around 5pm.

It's silly how nervous one gets over something stupid like this. And I want this operation done so I really am doing it to myself. Could easily have said no but I'd like to be able to actually breathe through my left nostril for a change.

Major thanks to Paul for picking me up after the hospital kicks me out and Brad for coming over to my house after band practice and spend the night. The hospital said I need someone with me the first 24 hours just in case something happens. That increased my nerves by tenfold haha.
I guess everything will be fine but never having had surgery it's all just a big unknown. I've already accepted the fact that they'll be cutting my nose to shreds and break it to straighten to septum. But that doesn't mean I look forward to it.

Hell, it's just a nose right???
Michael Jackson's nose can prolly use some company har har.
Oh, if shit goes terribly wrong then the few folks who read this blog will never know my favorite movie of all time.
Tough luck :-)

close but not yet: no. 2

2. 2001: A space odyssey

I remember vividly seeing this movie at a very young age on the German TV. Back in those days there weren't that many indie or classic movies broadcasted on the Dutch TV channels so I caught a fair amount of flicks dubbed in German. When it comes to "2001" it doesn't matter that much since there isn't a whole lot of dialogue anyway.
I was truly hypnotized. From the cavemen scene and the introduction of the black monolith it was apparent that this movie would have a world to say in imagery. The minutes long space trip after Dave has left the space station is dazzling to say the least. The effect of all those colors and shapes being thrown at you must feel similar to tripping out on acid or something. This scene was imprinted into my memory, sparked my imagination and led me to read some obscure science fiction books whose authors or titles I can't remember anymore.
Kubrick has only made a fairly small amount of movies and although I really love all of them, it is "2001: A space odyssey" that introduced me to this film maker and which changed my entire way of experiencing movies.

tension mounts as we hit the top 3

3. Naked

For years I felt like I was screaming in a desert like some lunatic. Ever since I first saw this gritty and utterly bleak representation of post-Thatcher English I have been telling everyone to see this movie asap. Mostly I just get confused and slightly scared looks in return. Some chuckled and asked whether it was a porn movie.
Mike Leigh has always had a knack for realistic characters that have a hidden layer beneath that the conversation surface.

"Naked" features David Thewlis in the role of his life as Johnny who feels utterly unable to communicate in an environment which leaves a lot of people disconnected. Additionally, his complex and sarcastic personality don't make things easy for him. The movie features another male character which could be seen as a sort of alter ego to Johnny. While both men don't treat women all that well it is the alter ego which mistreats women for his own sadistic pleasures. It seems Johnny partly acts out of self defense trying not to get hurt and partly out of the immense frustration of not being able to really communicate and connect with people.

At the end the characters are pretty much left off the same when we first encountered them, for better or for worse. For Johnny there's no peace of mind and he continues fleeing from everyone including himself.

countdown continues with no 4

4. The breakfast club

The first time I saw this film I did not like it. It was too dull, taking place in just a high school and pretty much no action whatsoever. I was very young and at that time I was more into action driven westerns and martial arts movies. When I saw it again one or two years later I was blown away. The dialogues are witty and spot on and even when the characters are joking around one can detract a rich layer of traits that makes them tick. Obviously, after watching this movie everyone was trying to figure out which one of the characters they were. Guys were breaking their head over being the athlete, the criminal or the brain while girls tried to figure out whether they were the princess or the basket case.
Yet the movie does not simply hammer on stereotypes. The further the story unravels the more we learn why these kids are what they are and act the way they do. As the movie concludes with the essay written by Brian, each one us is a criminal, athlete, brain, princess, and basket case. There might be differences in the prevalent trait but we're all human. Furthermore, the David Bowie quote at the very beginning of the movie ensures that this is not just some teen movie, it deals with genuine problems that people have to deal with while growing up. And everyone can relate to these timeless issues.
I even taped the entire audio of this movie at one point in time to listen to on my walkman (if anyone remembers those). That's how much I love this movie.

numero 5

Spell binding. On screen chemistry between two young actors who stroll through Vienna. A romantic movie pur sang. Some might say the ideas and opinions which these characters have are naive and/or generation X emo crap. I say they are a rather accurate depiction of two young persons at an important point in their lives. Anyone who has ever travelled alone will have to admit that they have secretly hoped to come across a similar chance meeting. Ah, but who truly had gathered enough courage to ask that person to join you?

number 6(66)

Another splendid movie with a less than straightforward story structure. Add the enticing symbolism, creepy atmosphere and a spectacular Tim Robbins as the epitome of confusion, to find a true gem of a film. Just thinking about it sparks several scenes to be replayed in my head. Have you ever encountered a movie with more realistic nightmares? I sure as hell haven't.

lucky number 7

7. Before the rain

I saw this movie on TV shortly after it was released. The critical acclaim made me curious and I'm very happy that it has been shown on TV at least two times. The way the director plays with time and ingeniously combines three stories into one circle, which is not round, is simply breathtaking. There is an abundance of scenes that have printed themselves onto my retina and even just thinking of the movie's finale drops my jaw to the floor.
Although this movie is extremely hard to come by I crave to see it again. Let's hope Criterion will one day grant my wish.

number 8...

8. L.A. confidential

Quite possibly the best film noir in the last 25 years. A bold statement perhaps but its place in the IMDB 250 ensures me that I'm not alone in admiring this movie. I was blown away by the amazing acting perfomances and the very intelligent plot development. Even after seeing it again I can't help but be awed by the spot on acting and sublime quality of film making showcased throughout this flick.

countdown continues

9. The wedding singer

This one will reap some raised eye brows for sure. Let me explain: yes it is a 'typical' romantic comedy with a rather predictable plot. BUT, what makes this romcom so amazingly good is the setting in the 1980s, the heart warming chemistry between Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and the superb jokes!
I grew up in the 1980s so seeing a movie in the late 1990s which depicts those good old times so accurately and in a stellar humorous fashion simply won me over in less than the blink of an eye.
It remains THE ultimate feel good movie!

Fave movies of all time! DEFINITE list! :-)

As soon as people find out that I'm addicted to movies they'll ask me what my favorite movies are so I decided to make a top 10 favorite movies of all time. I don't think the list is subject to change but perhaps the ranking of the movies is.

Some of these movies are in the IMDB top 250 but a very important factor is when I first saw the movie. As with everything in life the younger you are the more impact the experience will have on you. An honorable mention needs to go to the first "Shaka Zulu" TV series which is only not qualified because it is not a movie. I have watched this serie several times and when I bought it on DVD a few years ago it definitely had retained its original power.
This is actually another important criterium: being able to retain its original impact and intensity after repeatedly seeing the movie. I can honestly say that I've seen these 10 movies several times and can watch them again any time, any place.

In order to create some suspense and to avoid creating a huge post I'll add one movie per day. Without further ado:

10. Lawrence of Arabia

They truly don't make epic movies like this anymore. I never did mind slow pacing and elaborate character development, not even as a young boy. I was fascinated by this character from the get go. The story still resonates immensely and Peter O'Toole's performance is incredibly captivating.

So my DVD player finally died on me last night. I had been expecting this to happen since I got back from my Europe trip. The damn thing started having serious problems loading DVDs and froze during playback and skipped parts of the movies.
So last night it ate a DVD and I had to remove the top cover to be able to free the Netflix DVD.

Ran out to Best Buy to get the cheapest DVD player they had to offer which turned out to be an Insignia for 40 bucks including a 2 year warranty.
Already tried it out last night and it seems to be working fine. So I'm back in movie watching business!

All that's left to do is make it region free. Found the way to make this happen on the Web so that'll happen tonight.

Of septum or what thou willt

So as of now it is official: I'm finally getting my deviated septum fixed.
Yes I'm talking about my nose septum which has been deviated since I was born. After having spent 30 years of being able to breathe through mostly one nostril I want to be able to fully breathe in air through both nostrils.
Like the doctor said, it's a quality of life issue. And I want a higher quality damn-it!

So what do they do to fix your septum? Well basically they put you under full narcosis, slice your nose open, break the cartilege and straighten it. Then put a splint on each side of the nose which I'll wear for about 2 weeks. After that they'll be removed and my nose will be as good as new. Or, worst case scenario, like Michael Jackson.

Also need to get some "blood work" done before surgery is done. Which means they wanna stick some needles in me. I can't even remember the last time they drew my blood.

I must admit I'm nervous about the whole thing though. Sweaty hand palms etc.
Thing is I've never had surgery before aside from the tonsils being removed when I was still in primary school. My mom gave me a small stuffed panda bear to comfort me. But I remember wanting it before having my tonsils taken out haha.
I do remember giving my mom quite a hard time over this panda bear and I know for a fact that my nerves will be just as shot when I head to the hospital on December 19 to get my septum fixed.

But no mom around this time.

Anyone wanna volunteer?

winter in town

Since yesterday a big pile of snow has covered Pittsburgh.
Perhaps this is a Sinterklaas gift?

Obviously it's cold as hell too. Right now it's -11 Celsius/ 12 Fahrenheit.
Lovely.

repetitive reminder to myself

I think I've reminded myself about the following movie several times, perhaps even also on this blog. Yet I keep forgetting its title!
So here you go Ron: Before the rain.
One of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. If you ever see it available anywhere then don't hesitate to rent/buy/steal it!

some fun links

Dunno if this really happened but it's bound to: airplane passenger knows better than cockpit personnel: LOL

Funny to read how an American sees Dutchies riding bicycles in Amsterdam: click-me!

hibernation?

Sooo what have I been up to?
Besides watching a gazillion movies, working, playing soccer and the usual action that is.

I went on a trip to Arizona to kill two birds with one stone as the English saying goes.
First off a gig with Suffocation, Immolation and Skinless was to take place on November 8 in Tucson and since my ginger love Tom lives in Phoenix it seemed a great combination for this trip.
I booked rather early flight so on the 8th I got up at 5am and sort of miscalculated the time I would need since it froze that morning. So I had to scrape the ice from my windows asap and drive to the airport in record time. Fortunately all that went well and since I didn't have any luggage to check in I got my boarding pass quickly and the layover in Houston wasn't too bad.
Airport food mostly sucks but what's new?
After arriving at the Phoenix airport Tom was all set to take me to the house he rents with his fiancee Rhonda and we chilled out a bit. Then we took off for Tucson and hooked up with some friends of Tom Dave, the head of the Tucson mansion, made some pretty good burgers and after chilling out some more we drove to the venue called The Rock.

Suspense.

When we got there all the lights were off, no tour busses and almost no people around. When we walked up to the entrance there was a note saying "Tonight's show has been cancelled due to technical difficulties". That was all.
So after getting over the initial amazement we just headed back to Phoenix.
Slept in a bit and the next day we went to some pancake place for breakfast which had the following menu option: CLICK ME!
We checked out some CD stores, where I obviously bought some albums, and went to a liquor store. At first I couldn't find any palinka and it wasn't until I looked in the bottom shelves and behind the first line of bottles that I saw THIS.
Since I knew I was going to drink having good food in my system was the next step and we went to a tasty Mexican place where we loaded up on some fine food.
Before heading out to the British Open bar we had some shots and I refused to drink anything with alcohol they had in the bar haha. Kept saying we should go back to Tom's place (which was within walking distance) and take some more shots. Eventually one friend offered to drive us and I got seriously drunk but not completely wasted. Good times as the pics proof:
http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a137/Saldiac/AZ%20trip/
They're in a rather random order but photobucket messed up during uploading and I didn't feel like removing all the pics and re-uploading them again haha.
I also met another Dutchie who's one of Tom's friends. I think his name was Peter, though it also could have been Pieter. Same pronunciation and I wasn't sober so....

I contacted Ticketmaster the next day to try and get a refund for the cancelled gig as I had pre-paid/ordered tickets online. The response informed me that they had to wait for the official word from the promotor. I contacted the bands too and they told me they were at the venue and read the same message and that was it. So rather fucked up for all involved!

We got breakfast at Subway, visited another CD store and went to World Plus where we bought some Tim Tams and Dutch "stroopwafels" (caramel bites). In the afternoon we visited a "Belgian" fest. For a good laugh check out what "genuine" Belgian dishes they served: yeah right!
At least the beers were actual Belgium beers haha.
Later on we went to the British Open bar again where I shot some pool and won a few times but also got crushed several times by these AZ dudes.
Since I had to get up at 5am (again!) I went to bed around 10pm after which Tom and his clan went back to the pub to get more wasted. The next morning I missed my cab since it left at 5:27am instead of 5:30am which was the agreed on time. After calling the main office they sent his ass back to pick me up hehe.

Stand out things about AZ? Cacti, lots of them. Strip malls everywhere. I would get lost within 2 minutes cause it all looks alike: big lanes with shitloads of cars and even more strip malls.
A personal stand out thing was the leaky air mattress I was sleeping on. I woke up several times per night when the mattress was empty again and I had to blow it up again. Thankfully using some fancy automatic button thing. The last night I gave in and slept on the couch though hehe.

The flight back via Detroit went fine with just 30 minutes delay on the entire itinerary. After landing in Pittsburgh I drove straight to the soccer field so I could catch about 45 minutes of the soccer game :-)

Murphy's Law

So how was my trip back to Pittsburgh?
Well everything went fine until I got through customs at JFK airport.
I knew I had a 12 hour lay over so I wanted to hand my checked baggage, which one has to recollect on the 1st stop in the US, to Delta Airlines. But the representative said they couldn't process it until the next morning.
So then I looked for storage places within the 9 terminals at the airport. Was sent to terminal 4 for storage. Once I found the place I was told they didn't open until 7:30am while my flight was to leave at 8:35am.
I decided to go for a 1 night at the Holiday Inn.

Fast forward to the next morning: after the hotel's shuttle bus dropped me off at the airport I dropped off my luggage and since I already had my boarding pass since checking in in Amsterdam went through security just fine.
The plane arrived at our gate a bit late and we boarded slightly later than scheduled but okay. We taxi to the runway and then the captain informs us he's having problems with the wheel and he'd prefer to have a working whell and thus we return to the gate and deplane. Maintenance is looking at the problem and trying to figure out a way to fix it.
I tried reaching Brad who would pick my up at the Pittsburgh airport and who had my house keys. Couldn't get through to him so left a voicemail. Note that I had to use a pay phone since my Dutch cell phone apparently doesn't work in the US.
Meanwhile the airline informs us there's another flight to Pittsburgh at 11:05am. So everyone goes to gate 24 to try to get a seat on that flight. Once I get there the queue is long and I hear someone say they're only putting people on standby but not officially on a seat until the original 8:35am flight is cancelled.
I go back to gate 11 where the original flight was to leave from. After hearing my story they give me boarding passes for both flights since the original flight was set to leave at 11am.
Obviously I opt for the 11:05am flight and we board a bit late but again, okay.
We get to the runway and guess what?
Yup, this captain also reports some mechnical problem to us so we go back to gate 25. Fortunately maintenance is able to fix the problem this time around and we are finally able to take off.

Mind that the airline didn't want to transfer my luggage from the original flight to the actual flight that got me to Pittsburgh. I obviously knew my checked baggage would be lost upon arrival.
So I walk straight to the lost luggage office and file a report. Then I bought a drink so I'd get some quarters so I could try calling Brad again. Still not answering.
There's not much else I can do so I hop on the airport shuttle that would take me to CMU. Would since the bus breaks down like 10 minutes after leaving the airport. We wait until the next one comes and hop onto that one.
Once I get to CMU I can't get into my office since I don't have the keys on me (they're at my house) so I bug one of my colleagues so I can use his phone. Finally get through to Brad who picks me up and kindly helps me to get some groceries since my car is still at Vincent and Steffi's place.

Around 8 pm I call the Delta lost baggage service since they haven't delivered it yet. They inform me it should arrive between 8 and 10 pm or else the next morning. I ask for a phone number of the driver who will make the drop off but they tell me they don't have it. I bitch about other airlines who did give me the driver's number and tell her that they can leave my baggage on my porch even when I'm not awake.
Fortunately around 10:15 pm my baggage is delivered and nothing's missing like in Budapest.

Today I heard that Steffi was driving my car to the Waterfront for a nice work up but got a flat tire. Right now Vincent and her are trying to replace it with the spare tire. Haven't heard from them yet so I'll wait and see if they manage. If not then I'll just have the car towed to my regular garage and have them fix it.

Entertaining the neighbors with my music. I'm sure they missed it after 6.5 weeks of absence haha!

final Europe post

So on Friday I went to the Alchemist CD release party with Tim and Muuk at the new Dynamo cafe in Eindhoven. Apparently the band had some customs problems at the airport so they arrived late and started the gig later. No problem of course, it's Friday night!
Since the venue is very small I decided to put some tissue paper in my ears and I was quite right to do so since the sound was very loud.
Overall they played an hour with a good set and emphasizing on their new "Tripsis" album. They also played the one song I was hoping for: Jeff Wayne's "Eve of the war". Too bad they messed it up a bit. Ah well, still a very good warm up gig from this great Aussie band.

The ProgPower Europe festival was taking place on Saturday and Sunday so my final days in Europe were spent gloriously. On Saturday Bas joined me and we ran into Mattias Norén almost right away. Mattias is the guy who designed the artwork for my dissertation.
Also met a whole bunch of other Swedes of which 3 are from Örebro! Funny how small the world sometimes turns out to be since I was in Örebro just recently for the CD release party of The Project Hate!
The atmosphere at the ProgPower festival is a unique one. There's a wide variety in nationalities and everybody's so relaxed and keen on having a great time. Additionally the amount of visitors isn't too high so there's a high amount of visitors who know each other from previous editions of the festival.
Even I also ran into some more guys I know: VM colleague Filip and two of his friends and just before Orphaned Land started I saw Bram and his Israeli girlfriend. Funny how you don't see someone for years and then suddenly run into him/her.
I said 'even' since this is only my 3rd visit to the ProgPower festival in their 9 year existence :-)

Alchemist headlined the first day and this performance was superior in every possible way to the Eindhoven gig! Again "Eve of the war" was played and this time without glitches! Love this band!
On Sunday I drove to Baarlo alone but quickly hooked up with those crazy Swedes who love to have a good time and do silly things when being drunk hehe.
Jon Oliva's Pain headlined on this 2nd day of the festival and played a whole bunch of Savatage classics and some of his new solo material. Kick ass performance!
Afterwards the after party started and the DJ played all kinds of music, not just metal. The beer flowed and the DJ played Andre Hazes, Metallica, German Schlagermusic etc.
Eventually around 3:15am I decided to go home cause I still had to drive and the weather forecast had predicted mist banks.
I shot some pics but they're not that good. I was too keen on enjoying the gigs instead of on making great pics. Anyway, you can find them HERE.

I spend Monday mostly in bed trying to catch up on sleep and once I finally got up I packed my bags, collected all newly purchased CDs etcetera. You know the drill, doing the usual stuff one does when having to travel.

last night on the old continent

Been like 4 weeks since my last post :-)
I did a bit of work, got my new Dutch driver license, got an actually working new Dutch bank card, just can't do online banking at the moment with my Dutch bank. "They're working on it"...

On September 21 to September 23 I went to Örebro to visit the CD release party of The Project Hate. I travelled via Munich where Schorsch and Sabine (whom I know from the Global Domination forum) joined me. They had already rented a car so I accepted their offer to join them so I wouldn't have to figure out how to get to Örebro.
The hotel Skomamaren was fine and their weekend price of 65 euro per night pretty sweet. We also got to meet Kenth Philipson who is the head poncho of TPH and the GD forum. Always interesting to meet people in real life after getting to know them a little bit online hehe.

On Sunday we went to visit the Entombed cross at Skogskyrkogarden and drove through Stockholm for some sight seeing. Obviously I shot some PICS during this weekend, and Schorsch and Sabine's pics can be found HERE (release party) and HERE (Entombed cross).

The following week was the first week I actually joined both soccer sessions at my old soccer club on Tuesday and Friday night. On Thursday I visited Ed again for a movie night during which we watched "Adam's apples" and "Ichi the killer".
On Sunday September 30 I went to A-dam to hook up with Steven and Loes and see their new apartment. Drove a bicycle for the first time in Amsterdam, felt like whistling the "Turks fruit" theme haha.

Went to A-dam again on Wednesday October 3 to visit Alexander and go see Keith Caputo's gig at the Melkweg. Glad I did 'cause the gig was superb! Gotta love Keith who has a lot of charisma and a golden voice. Can't wait for his 3rd solo album to be released.

There's more to tell about my last days in the Netherlands but I'll wait with those until I get back to Pittsburgh.
Flying to JFK tomorrow night 6:20 pm (Dutch time) and arriving at 8:15pm (US time). After a 12 hour overlay I'll catch the flight to Pittsburgh at 8:25am on Wednesday.
Looking forward to all the angry companies whose bills I haven't paid during my absence haha.

Over and out for now...

holdiay, celebrate

The Paradise Lost gig was good, they even played some oldies like "Gothic", "As I die" and "Pity the sadness". No grunt though.
This was only my 2nd time at the Biebob so I forgot how much it resembles a sauna. Even when standing at the bar we were sweating like crazy.
After the gig we checked the Shiver Records store and I bought the new Mekong Delta and one of Manilla Road's albums for Ed.

Most of the days I've been watching either Twin Peaks season 2 and the movies in the Wong Kar Wai boxset. Good times!

Early Friday afternoon I jumped on a train to Joost who was so not looking forward to the Gorefest gig haha. Once we got to the Melkweg we got a ticket for Joost and headed to a Thai restaurant which is always a great choice imo.
The support act Cultura Tras, or something like that, sounded like some mid period Sepultura but despite their musical skills I didn't care about their gig. Chatted with Ed and Boudewijn for a bit and asked the Gorefest merch ladies to put 4 shirts aside for my American redneck friend Tom.
Also met some folks (deathmetalraver, his gf, decay, lukep) from the Global Domination forum before the gig started. Gorefest kicked off their set around 9:30 pm and ended around 11 pm. Strangely enough the crowd didn't explode until the 5th song which was the opening track of the new album.
I shot some nice pics of the GD forum members having fun during the show. Click HERE to check them out. It's the last 23 pics of that album.
After the gig I picked up the shirts and got a great deal concerning the price I had to pay. Then I grabbed the Gorefest band members to shoot some pics of them with the shirts for Tom's pleasure.

Shortly after the GF stage hands were done packing up their equipment a DJ set up and started playing electronic music. Quite an abrupt change in music style!
Joost was bored and wanted to go home but the GD folks wanted to hit the A-dam nightlife. So after some discussion I decided to join them and take a night bus back to Joost's place.
First we went to the small metal/rock bar The Cave but it was rather crowded so shortly after we headed to the Korsakoff. Interestingly they were playing some similar electronic music to what the Melkweg DJ was playing.
After a few hours they started to play some more rock/alternative/metal songs so I guess patience paid off in the end. The last 8 pics of the aforementioned link were taken at the Korsakoff.
I'm not sure at what time deathmetalraver, his gf and lukep went back to their hotels but the Korsakoff was still going strong. So I stayed there until closing time with decay and after the Korsakoff closed (around 4 am) I walked her back to her hotel. After I found the bus stop of the night bus I eventually arrived at Joost's place and hit the sack at 5:30 am.

I'm old and boring so I'm not using to going out that late. Saturday was mostly spend chilling out and in the afternoon I took the train back to Limburg.
Spent the remaining time of the weekend on the wonderful Twin Peaks and the incredible Wong Kar Wai boxset. Only 3 Twin Peaks episodes left plus some bonus material and only 1 bonus DVD of the WKW boxset left.

Right now I'm just abiding my time until the shops in our local mall open so I can buy some envelopes to send the Gorefest shirts to Tom.
Six minutes left.

weekend fun

Got back earlier tonight from a weekend of fun deluxe and some visa stuff earlier today.
On Friday I took the train to Arnhem where I hooked up with Toby who even made some dinner hell yeah. After a while we headed for downtown to the Willemeen venue where Gorefest was to play their first try out gig. The temperature inside rose pretty quickly and it was pretty obvious the gig was sold out.
Around 9:30 pm Gorefest entered the stage to blow us completely away. Amazing performance, great sound and killer setlist. No "Second face" though but I always have something to bitch about.
Shortly after the gig drummer Ed came out and we went backstage to chill out and chat a bit. Obviously heard some nice inside info and gossip but that's confidential haha.
At some point Toby and Iwan came backstage to tell me we needed to go to do some pub crawling. I think I ended up in bed around 4 am, much later than what I'm used to but always cool to break the boring pattern I've developed :-)
Pics of the gig and the backstage antics can be found HERE

The next day we got up way too early since I had a lot of time to kill to get to Hengelo. After some brunch in Arnhem Iwan and I left Toby to his own antics and took a train to Zutphen. Got out for some chilling and lunch at Bakkerij Bart downtown Zutphen haha.
After that Iwan took a train back to Leeuwarden and I continued my way to Hengelo where I arrived around 6 pm. Vegetated for an hour on some bench before going to a Dutch 'friture' (snackbar) to get me an old fashioned Dutch fries with mayonnaise and a bamischijf snack. Yum yum.
The Metropool venue opened around 8:30 pm and had a nice extra bar room where you could chill out and still hear the band play on the speakers. I grabbed me a new Gorefest shirt since the False shirt is about 14 years old by now haha.
The band braved impressive temperatures which exceeded the ones a day earlier. The setlist was the same with perhaps 1 or 2 songs changing in track order. Again the sound was great, perfect balance yet still crystal clear. The guitar sound was thicker than in Arnhem it seemed.
Fifteen songs later the band members lost some weight and left the audience majorly satisfied.
Since I didn't manage to arrange a place to spend the night in Hengelo Ed was so kind to offer me his place. After chilling out backstage we drove to Rotterdam in about 2 hours and I soon dozed off in the car. Got up around noon on Sunday and amongst others heard some Demiurg material which sounded promising to say the least.
Again major thanks to Ed for letting me crash at his place and for providing me with a great breakfast, you rule bro!

After hopping in the train from Rotterdam I headed off to A-dam where I hooked up with Joost. We spent some time in the city center where I also picked up the Twin Peaks season II DVD boxset. Afterwards we went to a Greek restaurant and had some great food. The night was concluded watching Argento's "Susperia".
And this morning I had my US embassy appointment which 'only' took me 1 hour and 15 minutes in total. So it really seems time decreases with each visa I apply for.
We spent the early afternoon in rainy A-dam and got some more goodies to satisfy our CD and DVD addictions. I couldn't help but buy the Wong Kar Wai DVD boxset. I friggin' love that director!

Tonight and tomorrow it's relaxing time and watching Twin Peaks :-)
Wednesday night I'm going to see Paradise Lost in the Biebob venue in Belgium and Friday is the official Gorefest CD release party. Good times!

charming drunk

So I just arrived at my parents' place earlier tonight and had some good old fashioned mom's dinner. My Dutch bank card did arrive last week thanks to my land lady and I could activate it but now my pin code doesn't work anymore. So I'm off to the bank tomorrow morning.

I also need some other stuff like 6.75 euro pre-stamped A5 envelope, new mugshot for Dutch driver's license and some other things I'm too tired to remember right now.

Apparently one of my parents' neighbors hasn't secured his/her wireless network so I'm gratefully piggybacking :-)

The 1.5 week in Budapest were great, the conference was good, spent quite a bit of social time with some Germans (Joerg, Rolf, Sandra, Tatjana) which was a lot of fun. On Friday night the omens indicated that I would get wasted on palinka. Dinner took about 1 hour and 45 minutes to be served and to make up for the delay they served us palinka. Since I hadn't had lunch I took my shot on empty stomach. Since one of the others didn't want to drink hers I took her shot too.
Bad idea.
I got drunk really quickly and managed to get through dinner fine. Once we got outside we hooked up with some more Germans (friends of Joerg, Ingo and Mark if I remember correctly) who heard news of an after gala dinner party in an obscure bar in the city center. The directions they had were rather horrible so it took us some time to find the place.
After getting their I didn't feel quite as drunk anymore and decided to change that. In total I must have had like 7 or 8 shots of peach and honey-peach palinka containing 40% alcohol. I won a game of table soccer and had a blast being drunk and talking my head off. Met some conference people whom I hadn't seen at the actual conference which is always nice.
Also met a PhD student (Sarah) at the University of Twente who will finish her PhD very soon. She turned out to be from Seattle and has been living in the Netherlands for about 5 years so since we were both foreigners living in abroad that got the conversation really going.
No need to dish out the details but time flew and I drank more and more palinka. Good thing we had agreed on taking a cab back to our hotels in the Buda part of town fairly early during the evening. To see some pics of this after party and me drunk click HERE
Of course when a woman calls you a charming drunk you are bound to remember that no matter how wasted you are :-D

I slept 2 hours and 40 minutes, got up and went to the early session on Saturday morning which started at 8:30am.
I didn't have a hangover and zero physical discomforts. The only drawback was that I was still drunk but one can't expect that amount of alcohol to leave your body in just a few hours of sleep.

From Sunday on I focussed on sight seeing Budapest. Since I'd been to this fantastic city twice before I went to some more off the beaten track sights like the Margaret Island, the Kerepes Cemetery and the Statue Park. For pics of al the sight seeing click HERE

Right, too tired to type more so good night and remember: you gotta have Hungarian blood to be able to take that Hungarian liquor called palinka! hahaha

Countdown to Europe: less than 1 day!!!

So surprise surprise: I didn't receive my Dutch bank card. I'll leave instructions for my land lady to FedEx or USPS send it to my parents' address if it arrives. Will also check in next Thursday to find out the status. If the card still hasn't arrived I'll call my bank and make them send another new card to my parents.
Yeah fucken lovely.

Packed my weekend bag but will transfer some stuff to my backpack. Gonna be quite the travel.
Leaving at 1:25 pm to Newark, then connecting flight to A-dam at 4:40 pm. I'll arrive at Schiphol at 6 am Sunday morning. Will collect my baggage and check in for the flight to Budapest. Then I'll try to buy a European SIM card so I can use my other US phone during the 6.5 weeks I'm in Europe.
Jetlag will be imminent!

Not sure how much internet access I'll have during this period so prolly won't update this blog a lot, if at all. But I'm sure I'll take plenty of pictures so there will be goodies once I get back to Pittsburgh on October 10.

Don't worry, I'm bringing my towel!

Countdown to Europe: 4 days

Not much news really. Just that my data are giving me headaches. The proverb states that if you torture your data long enough, it will confess to anything you want. But right now it feels more like the data is torturing is me.
So, what do the data want me to confess???

Four days left and still no sign of my new Dutch bank card....

Countdown to Europe: 6 days

Got a phone call from Eyetique last night informing me my new glasses have arrived. Will go pick them up tomorrow morning. Hopefully I'll like them or I'll have spent $680 for jack shit hehe.

Target rules!
This shop is a bit like the Dutch V&D but bigger and better. Bought some new underwear, contact lenses fluid and several cleaning cloths.

Since it's raining and I've watched all my Netflix movies I'm off to Dreaming Ant to rent some more flicks!

RIP Jos Brink

I found out this sad news earlier tonight. Although his death doesn't come as a surprise as word got out in July that he was terminally ill, it's definitely a big loss.
This guy was very active in pretty much all entertainment channels (TV, musicals, cabaret, etc.) and honestly, he was the real thing. Whereas so many TV personalities put on a mask/show this guy was just himself. Genuinely interested, caring and always having a good time.

Jos, you will be missed.

Countdown to Europe: 9 days

Bitching always works! Got the Gorefest CD yesterday and rocking out to it since I got home.
Also got 2 DVDs from my friend Paul from Canada who shot a lot of videos at the Maryland Deathfest 2007. Hope I'll have some time to check the DVDs out this weekend.

Still hot as hell inside my house. Airco is for posers!

Will get some groceries in a bit since I'm making pancakes again...

So I just found out this afternoon that I'll still have a job for at least next year starting September 1. Since officially there's a 3 year limit at CMU that one can be a postdoc we'll talk about the possibilities/limitations concerning my 4th year.
Quite possibly I'll end up applyin for a job elsewhere while still working on the current CMU project.

Informed my land lady right away so I won't be kicked out haha. Sweet.

I also read a news item today about a virus attacking other ABN AMRO customers. During the virus attack the customers unknowingly activate some mechanism which transfers money from their account to elsewhere. While the customers only see an error message. Pretty clever.
But I don't think that's what happened to me. Although, when I recently tried to log in online I did get an error message but I think that was because my bank card was expired. But it should be noted that this only happened to customers who were using an older OS version. I use Windows XP, not really old I'd say.
Additionally, my account was cancelled since April and to my knowledge this recent virus didn't cancel any accounts but it 'just' stole money.
Still puzzling but at least I have my account AND my money back.

Anyway, should throw a little party tonight! It would be awesome if the new Gorefest CD finally has arrived. After having paid $33 for an import version of the album from Germany one would expect that the seller would send it via airmail. But had he done so the CD should have arrived by now.
I think he found out I'm Dutch.
Bloody bastard!

Countdown to Europe: 10 days

Got my visa papers all done. Still need to pay the € 80 fee but I need my new Dutch bank card for that.
Also need to buy an A5 size envelope and self address it and place € 6.45 worth of stamps on it so the embassy can mail my passport with the new visa back to me.

Brought my Acer laptop to the Computer Maintenance Group and was told it might be the main logic board (whatever that is). If that's the case then they said it ain't worth fixing and I'd be better off buying a new laptop.
We'll see.

It's only 10 days left now! Getting more excited every day though it hasn't really sunk in yet since I'm still in the midst of everything here.

countdown to Europe: 11 days

Ok, got my picture taken for my new visa and filled in most of the 3 visa forms. Gotta get 1 more contact person for one form and check the issuance date of my current visa.
My advisor/colleague Vincent will use my car in my absence so I can avoid getting those annoying parking tickets concerning the city's street cleaning activities.

Also got a message from my Dutch bank indicating my money was taken by unknown people but has now been restores on my reactivated account. They also said the new bank card is on its way.
Yay.

Gotta bug the EC members tomorrow to see if they can let me know the decision about approving/rejecting our new project proposal before I leave on the 25th.
Whatever their answer will be I will need to negotiate with my land lady. If they give me the decision's outcome then obviously I'll have a better position in the negotation but we'll see.

Right, am going to a friend who's helping me with my own laptop. If we get it fixed and revamped I will take this laptop with me on my Europe trip. If not then I'll bring my work laptop.

Work? Uhm, yeah. I'll get some work done, also need to make my presentation for the Earli conference in Budapest. Just found out our symposium is scheduled on Wednesday August 29 at 8:30am.
Lovely.

Westworld reprise

One of the people I hung out with at Westworld has put some pics on her facebook site.
I originally had a link to the CogSci photo book but apparently if I post 3 links only 2 of them work. Lovely.
Pics with me in it are HERE and HERE.
Feel free to browse her photos to get some idea of that scary place we were stuck in for about a week.

I'd never seen facebook before despite invites from a few people. I don't like it. The space it uses is way too small for my liking. Additionally the fact that only 66.666666666% of the links will work is utterly retarded.

I luv my blog, I'm sticking with this!

minor complaints

Since I'm in a sharing mood I'll write down two small occurences that also happened this week.
When I was trying to open a data file in SPSS a few days ago I got an error message informing me my license was expired. Interesting since I've only had the program for half a year and the license ought to be valid for 4 years.
After getting in touch with their tech support I explain the situation and over the course of the day they give me a few solutions to try out. Fortunately, one solution (replacing 1 fucken dll file!!!) actually managed to solve the error message and I'm back in business.
Only took me about a day though.

I decided I'd work at home yesterday since I wanted to catch up on some sleep and had some household chores to do. Shortly after I finally was ready to do some work on my laptop (around 3 pm) a huge thunderstorm with a zillion lightning flashes and torrential rains sweeps over Pittsburgh. It knocks out the power in my neighborhood (and other Pittsburgh areas) for hours so I'm left with no other choice to shut down my laptop.
I decide to take a ride to have a look at the aftermath of the enormous storm. There's tree branches on streets, traffic lights not working due to the knocked out power, police barricaded several streets due to flooding and most of the main roads are back up with traffic.
Since the power is still out when I get back to my appartment I decide to check out the cinema and see if they are still operational. Fortunately they are and I end up watching "Rescue dawn" at the Squirrel Hill theatre and "Bourne ultimatum" at the Loews theatre.

Yeah, been a rather eventful week :-)

Dealing with bureaucracy living abroad 2: the disappearing bank account

Since I never use my Dutch bank card while living here in Pittsburgh I only found out a few months after de facto that my Dutch bank card expired in February 2007. So 3.5 weeks ago I called my Dutch (ABN AMRO) bank to ask how I can obtain a new bank card. I am told my current address is not in their system so I need to send them a form with which they can update their files. They also tell me to include a letter in which I can request a new bank card. Lastly, they tell me it will take 2 weeks for the new bank card to arrive at my 'new' US address.
I do all this and spend $36 to have the package delivered by USPS to the bank within 2 days. The delivery is confirmed on the USPS website.

Today (August 10) is exactly 3 weeks that the package arrived at the ABN AMRO office. Since I have not heard anything I call them again. They inform me that my 'new' address is now in their system. Yay.
But then they tell me all my Dutch accounts are cancelled as of April 2007. They do not know why. They don't know any answers; they don't know where my money went.
I explain that in order to obtain a new US visa on September 10, 2007, I need to pay the visa fee with a valid Dutch bank card which holds my name. That is an explicit demand which I can't avoid. If I fail the embassy will not process my request for a new visa. I tell them that if this happens it will not make CMU nor me very happy.

Having fun yet? I promised that you'd love these experiences!

An hour ago the office of the ABN AMRO at which I used to do my business when I still lived in the Netherlands gets back to me to inform me my bank account has been reactivated. Great.
Also, they have processed my request for a new bank card which should arrive at my US address 'soon'. They can't guarantee it will arrive within 2 weeks time but 'it should'. I'm leaving for Budapest on August 25.
Still no answer to where my money went, they'll get back to me on that.

So, still considering to go work/live abroad? Think again. Have a laugh at my expense. Then stay put.

Dealing with bureaucracy living abroad 1: driver license drama

For people who are considering to go work and live abroad; here's some nice first hand experiences. You'll love them for sure!

1. US driver license: I needed to renew it. So I called the phone number listed on their website. Got a computer and a zillion options which are only useful for US citizens. So I filled in an online contact form with all my questions since I'm a foreigner and know that I need to bring extra documentation and stuff.
I did get an official response with answers so I went to a driver license center which should be able to help me according to the official response. Wrong. They tell me I need to go to another center which can update my INS status (meaning my visa status). I go to that 2nd center, wait for 2.5 hours and then am being told I miss 1 form which states that I am being employed by CMU. I complain. They tell me I can make an official complaint at an office adjacent to this central helpdesk. I walk over and complain some more. The guy tells me to come back directly to his office once I get the CMU statement.
So after obtaining that statement I go directly to his office. He asks me when my current driver license expires, I tell him August 31. He responds that they can't renew it now since you can only do that between 3 days prior and 3 days after the expiration date. I tell him I'll be in Europe from August 25 on. Only then he asks me if I'm a US citizen. Ah, since I'm not he can help me renew the license right now.
Total time needed to finally attain my new US driver license: 2 weeks.

2. Dutch driver license: since it expired in June 2007 I requested the required forms from the Dutch company called RDW. They send it to my parents' address even though I explicitly asked them to send the forms to my US address. After my dad has sent the forms I fill in everything and realize I need a new photograph. A Dutch size photograph. Which is a different size than the ones they have here in the US. I've been unable to find a photography place which can provide me with the correct size photograph.
Current status: I'll wait until I get back to the Netherlands, then have my picture taken and send in all required materials to obtain my new Dutch driver license.

The Westworld experience and other updates

The CogSci conference was held last week in Nashville, Tennessee and I spent most of it (July 31-August 5) at the hotel.
The day before I left (July 30) I quickly made my poster for the conference, got it printed, worked on an abstract for a symposium at another conference, and worked on the new project plan to be submitted two days later.

Since I arrived on Tuesday I was lucky since a lot of colleagues were supposed to fly in on Wednesday on an ill-fated flight. The same airline (US airways) that catered my flight told my colleagues that there was some "mechanical failure" and that the flight was cancelled while all of them were sitting at the gate, ready to board the plane.
Since it was pretty much only my colleagues who were on this flight it is likely that US airways figured it would cost them money to actually do this flight and subsequently cancelled it.
My colleagues were forced to chose between two flights and either take one or two lay-overs.
I felt sorry for them but also smiled to myself that I was smart/lucky to fly in the day before the conference started. This is exactly the kind of crap which you want to avoid and I fortunately did.
Good thing for all of us the flight back to Pittsburgh went smooth like butter without any glitches.

I fear it will be hard to explain to YOU who hasn't been there and I figured bringing my camera would be pointless since I was to spend almost all my time just at the 'hotel'.

First of all, after seeing the enormous lobby area and spotting an entrance leading to a large area with palm trees and a bridge over a pond, I got the feeling this 'hotel' would be somewhat different from the usual hotels I've been to.
During checking in I was given a map, to check it out click HERE.
Obviously I got lost once I walked off the main path in the Delta wing and the labyrinthine hallways where the guestsroom where located didn't help much in finding my room.
Eventually I figured it out, just moments before I lost the hilarity of the situation and started to get pissed off.

After getting rid of my bags and installing my stuff in the room I went out to scout the hotel areas. The first impression was of awe, inspired by seeing all those plants, trees, ponds, cascades and the likes. This hotel has also about 6 restaurants, 2 pubs, several shops, a few cookie/sandwich/salad places.
So pretty much it had almost everything one would need to live. Of course this was way too luxurious and expensive deluxe. But being stuck in such a 'hotel' somewhere between airport and the city left me with not many alternatives than to spend money like it was plain water.
Furthermore, the restaurants and pubs closed fairly early so the 'hotel' had a huge impact on our daily rhythm.

Let me tell you that being in a large airconditioned area where you are forced to breathe, eat and drink according to their schedule will make any living being feel awkward.
Besides the obviously hilarious hotel name (seriously, Gaylord Opryland, what the fuck?) the atmosphere of being coerced into sullen obedience in the country music capital of the world gave this entire experience an unreal touch.
It literally did feel like being in "Westworld" (Yul Brynner movie anyone?) and we had several conversations about the absurdity of the situation. We never really knew what those other two conferences were (office suppliers suppliers, what the hell?) and if the participants were actual humans or planted robots.
We also observed some drunken actions, mostly by guys (or robots...), who cornered/harassed women by groping and trying to kiss them. Pretty hilarious really. But also strange since the targeted women didn't oppose as much as one would expect. In one case (at the blues bar, see below) the woman actually went home with the guy after he had harassed, pulled her hair and groped her for well over an hour! Go figure...

After a few days I started to feel a bit freaked out. But I guess THEY noticed and adjusted the air composition in my hotel room so that feeling settled down fairly quickly. Eventually we dared to leave the compound, not in shuttle buses as they wanted as to, but on foot. Yes we were so bold and brave!
And actually found several normally priced restaurants, a HUGE mall (3 miles long if I'm correct) and best of all: fresh outside air. Wow.
We ended up going to the same blues bar downtown Nashville two nights in a row on Friday and Saturday night. A band played both nights with a nice mixture of rock, blues, covers and major guitar wankery. The frontman was quite the showman and walked up the stairs to the upper area of the bar to show off to all the audience members. Still, he had some mad skills and his band played as a tight unit. Though I'm not much of a blues fan it really was very enjoyable.

The last character I wanna mention is one of the cab drivers we had. It was Tony Montana.
Seriously.
He slowly worked on his looseness really. First he told us a story about him being nice to his customer (he returned a wallet with lots of $$$) and the customer scolding him for being late because he dared to pick up another customer with whom he had prior arrangement.
Then he started telling us that we shouldn't use Yellow Cab at any cost since their employees are ill-treated by their bosses, he knew 'cause he had worked for that cab company. But after this he started telling that the Yellow Cab employees are mostly Somalians and that they frequently steal his customers after he got a dispatch call.
He'd see them pull off right in front of him. Since he tried the nice way of talking to them and they always denied stealing his customers so he figured he wouldn't let them take advantage of him anymore. So nowadays every time he sees one of them Somalians he walks right up to them and....
SPITS THEM RIGHT IN THE FACE!!!!
Happens every day, he just walks up to them and spits in their face. That'll teach them to steal his customers.
Ok Tony, thanks for giving us front door service to the blues bar but don't expect us to call you later tonight to bring us back to our hotel hahahaha!

So now it's Tuesday August 7 and I've survived Westworld, weird people, whacky cab drivers.
Frank Capra was right: it's a wonderful life!

More Impetigo!!!

I posted the Impetigo gig review HERE

Plus I finally received the original Wild Rags version of their debut album "Ultimo mondo cannibale" which features a prank phone call used as an intro for the song "Heart of Illinois". Why this is so amazing to have? Because this prank call was removed from both the Morbid Records and the Razorback Records re-issues!!!!

So now I have all 3 copies of "Ultimo mondo cannibale" AND 1 of them has that killer prank call!!!

This and the fact I finished the final Harry Potter book even make up for the $729 I had to pay to fix my car haha!

IMPETIGO!!!

I don't turn into a fanboy easily but when I found out last year that the mighty Impetigo would be playing a one gig only reunion I felt like I could fly!
After having listened to their music for 15 or 16 years and I never thought of being able to see this legendary gore band live and obviously I just had to be at this concert no matter what.
So this last Saturday July 21 at 10:30 pm I went into gore heaven and I'm not sure I've returned from it yet.
Expect a nice long review about our trip and the Impetigo experience on and off stage at Vampire Magazine later this week.
For now THE PICS will have to suffice.

Happy as fuck, tired as hell and satisfied like a zombie feasting on its first victim!!!

More on 9/11 and the extent to which the official government explanations stink:
Dutch news item but video in the bottom is in English

Following this vid I checked out the pilots' main website: http://pilotsfor911truth.org/

Note that I'm not advocating wild conspiracy theories but these experienced pilots have valid questions to which they are not getting any answers. There's a lot more 'out there' on the web concerning 9/11 and it is undeniable that there are way too many accounts that dispute the official story. Hence something stinks.
We'll see if we ever find out the real deal.

So what the hell have I been up to the past two months?

Been catching a bunch of concerts. Saw The Gathering live for the 7th time, shortly after which they announced the departure of their vocalist.
On May 25-27 I was in Baltimore to do the Maryland Deathfest which turned out to be really cool. Hooked up with a Canadian guy who didn't mind me bashing the US so we got along superbly ;-)
My neighbors hired a company to remove a tree from their property and the company also took down my main electricity cables and didn't reconnect them once they were done with the tree removal.
I organised a BBQ for our project which we had been talking about since last summer but never got around to until now.
I have been called detached, self-centered and unwilling to commit.
Earlier today my land lady called to see if I could sign a new 1 year lease and since I can't due to the uncertainty if I still have a job from Sept on she indicated she'd rather rent out the apartment to someone else.

I'm sure I'm leaving out some things but rest assured that these were the highlights haha.

Never a dull moment...

It's raining outside but I'm nearly pissing in my pants with laughter: United 300!!!
I just found this kiwi ad on a forum:
http://www.vision-execution.com/personal/storyof42.html

I love the face of Jake the Muss on the TV screen when the voice over talks about "cook some eggs". Great eye for detail!

Being a celebrity usually means having your head screwed on the wrong way.
But being born rich and not having to do anything with your life except waste it completely means you should be thrown into a deep pit on Antarctica.
Paris Hilton is the personification of all evil lazy no good rich fucks. Her recent whining to convince the common people she brings hope to our otherwise mundane world makes me wanna puke.
Her ass belongs in jail just like any other person who breaks the law. Hence my good deed for the entire year 2007 was to sign this petition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/jailparishilton/?e

Do yourself a favor and sign it too.

short Miami invasion

Been a great weekend!

Via Atlanta I flew down to Miami on Saturday to catch a gig by Aghora and Atheist, two bands I dig a lot.
Learned that in Miami 10 minutes actually means 40 minutes. When the cab driver finally showed up at the hotel I asked him to break the traffic rules to get me to the club before 7 pm haha.
Right after having paid him I ran into the Aghora guys who tell me they're not gonna play at 7 pm since Atheist hasn't arrived yet. So I can relax and talk a bit with Giann and Alan from Aghora. Also meet Aghora main man Santiago and his wife Ingrid, after which Santiago runs off again to continue arranging stuff for the gig.
First band I caught played like 4 or 5 songs and inform the audience they've only started a few days ago haha. Next up were The Mandrake who put on a good show, always nice when a band puts on a good first impression.
Aghora and Atheist were fucken superb! Not that I expected otherwise but having been waiting so long to see these bands live I was not disappointed.
Click HERE to see pics of the bands. A review will soon follow on Vampire Magazine.

During all the running around and arranging Santiago kindly offers to drive me back to my hotel after the gig's finished. For those of you wondering how much this saved me: $70.
In total I spent $100 on cabs on Saturday. Apparently I had just missed the shuttle bus at the airport and the hotel told me I'd have to wait another 30 minutes before it would be back at the airport. Considering the tight time schedule I took a cab which costed $30.
Quickly checking in and calling another cab to drive me to the club costed the aforementioned $70.

The gig ended around midnight I think and afterwards I hung out with Santiago, Ingrid and their two sons Isaac and Luca. Their nightly odyssey for food was definitely interesting haha.
Santiago kept saying I'd tell everyone the Dobles family is crazy and that I'd never come back to Miami. Well, the Osbournes have nothing on you guys! :-P
Seriously, I can't thank them enough for the warm welcome and good time they showed me.
In a world where many people like to put on a better version of themselves when meeting new people it's refreshing when meeting people who just keep it real. No matter how "crazy" they might be, I'll always prefer folks who are just being themselves.

After they dropped me off at my fake airport hotel around 3:10 am I set the alarm at 5:15 am to catch the shuttle to the airport. But somehow I manage to sleep through the alarm haha.
That's something which never happened before so I guess I must be getting old or something.
Anyway, I wake up by the phone ringing and in my sleeping mood I pick up and immediately slam down the receiver. Then I look at the clock and it tells me it's 5:52 am!!
Then the phone rings again and this time I manage to actually speak haha. The shuttle bus driver realizes I overslept and says he'll put me on the list for the 8 am shuttle bus. But I protest since my flight leaves at 8 am. For some reason he doesn't get it, maybe my lips are not completely doing what I think I'm saying. But after a second repetition stating I NEED to catch this shuttle to catch my flight I finally convince him and get dressed and throw everything into my backpack. Obviously I give the driver a generous tip cause if he hadn't called me twice I'd have missed the shuttle and my flights.

Once I get to the terminal at the airport it turns out the flight to Atlanta is delayed but that's fine since I would have a 2.5 hours stop over anyway. The flight to Pittsburgh was also delayed but only very slighty so we land right on time (2 pm).
When I turned my phone back on I read a txt message from Andy informing me they're playing soccer at 5 pm. i had expected them to play earlier than our usual time (3 pm).
Since I had already planned to go to a social event for Queens Day (Dutch holiday) I went there for a short time and left to play some soccer. I managed to score one goal but wasn't able to give 100%. Plus I need to start running again cause I'm frequently out of breath on the pitch. That needs to change.

Anyway, after soccer I shower again and eat something while watching a DVD. But around 10 pm I crumble completely and go to bed.

To recap, I'm really glad I flew out to Miami since not only did I see a killer show but I also got to meet some very cool people.

Finished the last part of the "Once were warriors" trilogy earlier this week. Brilliant final book of a Maori tale which started off in a menacing fashion in "Once were warriors".
The movie version was able to capture the first novel perfectly and can be considered a modern day classic.
"What becomes of the broken hearted" was a great follow-up book but the movie version deviated considerably which is a shame since the book had so much more to offer than the action focussed on in the movie.
In this final part "Jake's long shadow" there's almost no violence. Well, not entirely true but the four instances that do lead into violence are cut off right when people start bashing each other. Quite effective.
But the focus of this final part lies much more in the drama of the remains of the Heke family so many years after Beth and Jake's explosive marriage. There's superb dialogues here and the frequent exposure to Jake's thoughts makes up for a thrilling read.
If they ever do make a movie of "Jake's long shadow" then I hope they'll get Temuera Morrison to play Jake Heke again. Not only has he played that role in the first two movies but he's a great actor who deserves to play this character who's been through so many soul searching after the break up with Beth.
Mark my words, if this movie is ever made and Temuera plays Jake again then he might very well win some fucken awards. The Jake is character is THAT intricate and interesting. And Temuera simply owns that role.

To end the rant, huge kudos to Alan Duff for writing about Maoris and their culture so candidly. He's brutally honest and never strays from exposing the spots where it hurts most.
Excellent writer.

memory flash back

Silly how something trivial can trigger a memory. I just finished watching Woody Allen's brilliant "Hannah and her sisters" and looked at the banana on the table and BAM.
I'm back in 1994, on a school trip to London. We visit the old Wembley stadium and were given a lunch box with among other things a banana in it. We had a group picture taken right outside the soccer stadium and I remember vividly being in a silly mood and placed the banana in front of my crotch. My friend and class mate Erik saw me, laughing and imitated me.
Back at school we checked the pic and sure enough you could see us standing there with a banana in front of our crotches. Perhaps no one else realized what we did on the pic since a group pic obviously doesn't show much detail per person.
Either way, juveline fun is the best. Cheers to Erik (where ever he may be) for joining in.

A song of solace

Come in, babe
Across these purple fields
The sun has sunk behind you
Across these purple fields
That idiot-boy in the corner
Is speaking deviated truths
Come on, admit it, babe
It's a wonderful life
If you can find it
If you can find it
If you can find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
Ooh it's a wonderful thing

Speak our secret into your hands
And hold it in between
Plunge your hands into the water
And drown it in the sea
There will be nothing between us, baby
But the air that we breathe
Don't cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
If you can find it
If you can find it
If you can find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
It's a wonderful, wonderful thing

We can build our dungeons in the air
And sit and cry the blues
We can stomp across this world
With nails hammered through our shoes
We can join that troubled chorus
Who criticise and accuse
It don't matter much
We got nothing much to lose
But this wonderful life
If you can find it
And when you find it
And when you find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
It's a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful thing

Sometimes our secrets are all we've got
With our lives we must defend
Sometimes the air between us, babe
Is unbearably thin
Sometimes it's wise to lay down your gloves
And just give in
Come in, come in
Come in, come in
To this wonderful life
If you can find it
And if you find it
It's a wonderful life that you bring
It's a wonderful, wonderful thing
It's a wonderful life
It's a wonderful life

Tom's love letter to me

"O we will know, won't we?
The stars will explode in the sky
O but they don't, do they?
Stars have their moment and then they die"

Thanks again Nick...
Everything is back to normal. Sort of.
Carnaval is over, people who weren't at the party can't believe I was actually drunk, Stefan survived after puking his guts out on Sunday and even moved into his own place on Monday evening.

Belgian mobster Matthias reminded me of a prom party we went to last year and I hadn't seen all of those PICS.
Sweet memories of sexy balloons.

Today the new Dark Tranquillity album leaked and although I'll buy it I ain't gonna wait two more months before I can listen to it.
I can be brief since I shall write an overlong review soon, the album fucken kills.
This truly is music that speaks volumes for and about me. I fully realize that makes me a fanboy but hey, I just like redheads haha!
Can't wait to catch their headline show on March 30th!
