So I just arrived at my parents' place earlier tonight and had some good old fashioned mom's dinner. My Dutch bank card did arrive last week thanks to my land lady and I could activate it but now my pin code doesn't work anymore. So I'm off to the bank tomorrow morning.
I also need some other stuff like 6.75 euro pre-stamped A5 envelope, new mugshot for Dutch driver's license and some other things I'm too tired to remember right now.
Apparently one of my parents' neighbors hasn't secured his/her wireless network so I'm gratefully piggybacking :-)
The 1.5 week in Budapest were great, the conference was good, spent quite a bit of social time with some Germans (Joerg, Rolf, Sandra, Tatjana) which was a lot of fun. On Friday night the omens indicated that I would get wasted on palinka. Dinner took about 1 hour and 45 minutes to be served and to make up for the delay they served us palinka. Since I hadn't had lunch I took my shot on empty stomach. Since one of the others didn't want to drink hers I took her shot too.
Bad idea.
I got drunk really quickly and managed to get through dinner fine. Once we got outside we hooked up with some more Germans (friends of Joerg, Ingo and Mark if I remember correctly) who heard news of an after gala dinner party in an obscure bar in the city center. The directions they had were rather horrible so it took us some time to find the place.
After getting their I didn't feel quite as drunk anymore and decided to change that. In total I must have had like 7 or 8 shots of peach and honey-peach palinka containing 40% alcohol. I won a game of table soccer and had a blast being drunk and talking my head off. Met some conference people whom I hadn't seen at the actual conference which is always nice.
Also met a PhD student (Sarah) at the University of Twente who will finish her PhD very soon. She turned out to be from Seattle and has been living in the Netherlands for about 5 years so since we were both foreigners living in abroad that got the conversation really going.
No need to dish out the details but time flew and I drank more and more palinka. Good thing we had agreed on taking a cab back to our hotels in the Buda part of town fairly early during the evening. To see some pics of this after party and me drunk click HERE
Of course when a woman calls you a charming drunk you are bound to remember that no matter how wasted you are :-D
I slept 2 hours and 40 minutes, got up and went to the early session on Saturday morning which started at 8:30am.
I didn't have a hangover and zero physical discomforts. The only drawback was that I was still drunk but one can't expect that amount of alcohol to leave your body in just a few hours of sleep.
From Sunday on I focussed on sight seeing Budapest. Since I'd been to this fantastic city twice before I went to some more off the beaten track sights like the Margaret Island, the Kerepes Cemetery and the Statue Park. For pics of al the sight seeing click HERE
Right, too tired to type more so good night and remember: you gotta have Hungarian blood to be able to take that Hungarian liquor called palinka! hahaha
